18 May Stephen is backing us…
PARALYMPIAN Stephen Miller is thrilled to throw his weight behind this summer’s sporting highlight for the Sunshine Fund.
The champion thrower from Cramlington is a long-time supporter and patron of our charity which raises money or disabled children throughout the North East.
The gold medal-winner, who is now setting his sights on this year’s Paralympics in Rio, is once again proving a good sport by agreeing to launch the annual Sunshine Run in June.
He called it “a great event” and said: “I am really looking forward to race day!”
Cerebral palsy sufferer Stephen, who has won 25 international medals during his career to date, including three back-to-back Paralympic golds, already helps local children through his organisation SMILE Through Sport which he set up with his wife.
But he has always found time to support the Sunshine Fund too and he will be at the Newcastle Quayside starting line of the Sunshine Run again on June 22.
Over the years the Sunshine Run has built up a loyal following. Its aim is to raise £15,000 towards the £60,000 target the Go Bananas appeal has set itself this year.
Stephen said: “I am thrilled to be starting the Sunshine Run again; it is such a fun day for everyone involved.”
The run is sponsored by intu Metrocentre and intu Eldon Square, whose marketing manager Tania Vesty said. “It is great to be a part of the Go Banana’s campaign, helping to raise money and support the fantastic work that the Sunshine Fund do.”
Helen Atkinson, her counterpart at intu Metrocentre, is also one of 25 staff who have signed up for run.
She said: “I can’t wait to get my running shoes on! We also have staff volunteering on the day and we are all really looking forward to it.”
Rebecca Jama, events executive at the Sunshine Fund, thanked the shopping centre sponsors.
