01 Sep Rachel’s Column Thurs 24th August 2017

Hello. It’s Rachel here. Caroll is off on a well-deserved holiday so I’ve taken over the column this week.

It’s been six months in post for me as the family liaison officer and what an amazing six months it’s been. We’ve already helped so many children to get the equipment they desperately need and I’ve been working hard to make sure that we are spreading the word about the charity far and wide. But I can’t reach as many people as I’d like, so I need to ask for your help. I’d love it if you could tell just one person about the fund and the work we do. Do it today, do it tomorrow – word of mouth is so powerful but to really tap into it, I need all of you to get involved! I don’t think there could be a simpler ‘good deed of the day’ challenge!

We are very excited that Lowes has come on board as our first official Diamond Partner. It is a fabulous local company with a passionate and caring charity committee who are dedicated to helping local children. Our next round of grants funding is coming up very soon so we’re busy sorting through applications so that we can allocate their amazing donation to our sunshine kids. It’s really fantastic to get support from our corporate partners and it makes a direct difference to the lives of local children.

On Wednesday we held a Sunshine Families Fun Day – we wanted to get our families together for an accessible play session during the summer holidays. Thanks to Brian at Newburn Activity Centre, we got a fun filled afternoon and our families enjoyed using the soft play, sensory rooms and adapted bikes. It’s so important to us that families have the opportunity to go to events that can cater for wide range of needs and are inclusive. Our team were on hand to provide advice and support to any families who were looking to apply for equipment or wanting to get involved with fundraising. A huge thanks to the team at Newburn Activity Centre for making it happen.

September is nearly here, and that means Great North Run time! We always have such a fantastic time on the day – the atmosphere is amazing. We’ll be manning our very own Chronicle Sunshine Fund marquee on the day in the GNR Charity Village with professional sport massages and refreshments on offer for our wonderful runners. If you’re running the GNR with a ballot place, would you consider raising some funds for us? We need all the help we can get to ensure that we can fund all the equipment that is requested by our local families.
