A SHOPPING centre manager is undertaking the challenge of a lifetime to help disabled North East youngsters – and you could join him.

Phil Steele, who has run intu Eldon Square for the last five years, will take part in The Chronicle Sunshine Fund’s Trek Petra in October and places are still available on the epic trip.

The 52-year-old says he is looking forward to releasing his inner spirit of adventure when he flies to Jordan to for the five-day adventure – helping the charity which provides specialist equipment for disabled children.

The five-day trip begins at the Unesco World Heritage Site of Petra, a city carved into the mountains and subsequently lost for hundreds of years.

From there, the trekking party will face three days of walking in temperatures as high as 30C through mountainous and desert terrain.

At the end of each day, participants will bed down in tents or sleep under the stars.

Phil said: “intu Eldon Square has supported The Chronicle Sunshine Fund for many years so when I heard about Trek Petra I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for me to raise money, combined with the chance to visit a part of the world I had never previously encountered.

“The challenge is daunting, but I’ve got a few months to get myself into better physical shape, especially following the excesses of the festive period!

“Until now my level of fitness has been dictated by a couple of games a month on the golf course, so I’ve signed up to Eldon Leisure and they’ve sorted me out with a fitness training regime so I don’t show myself up or let anyone down when I get there.”

He added: “At the end of three days of hiking, I am looking forward to relaxing in the Dead Sea – I know I will appreciate it as I’ll be dead beat by then.”

All Phil’s costs have been paid for by intu, meaning every penny he raises will go directly to the Fund, with a number of suppliers and retailers at the shopping centre already offering their backing.

Clare Savory, Sunshine Fund events manager, said: “We are delighted to welcome Phil on board for our Trek Petra challenge.

“All the money raised from the trekkers will be supporting children with disabilities here in the North East with specialised equipment. We still have a limited number of places still available for this fantastic adventure. To register email clare.savory@ncjmedia.co.uk or call 0191 201 6068.”
