06 Jul Caroll’s Column Thursday 6th July
Hi, well here we go July already, let’s hope the weather gets the summery message soon.
I am delighted to announce you did it! You raised over £60,000 in June which means we have been able to buy all the specialist equipment for the 10 children in our Go Bananas appeal and the specialist playgroup equipment for Charles Parsons school so it’s celebrations all round. I am always blown away by how generous Chronicle readers and the people of the North East are and this year has been no exception so thank you to everyone who has helped. Also a huge thank you to intu Eldon Square and intu Metrocentre who sponsored the whole appeal allowing us to reach lots more people, their staff fundraised and they also collected in both centres, amazing thanks guys.
We have organised a celebration for all the children and their families at intu Eldon Square on Saturday when the children will get to meet Paw Patrol courtesy of Margaret Rose Events who have been so supportive throughout Gobananas. It will be another opportunity to meet the children and hear how the equipment has made a difference to their lives. Now that Go Bananas is over I was able to go for three long walks at the weekend, I did a total of 10 hours in my trekking boots in preparation for our Iceland trek next week. This trek is going to be a real challenge for me as we walk between 8-10 hours per day in very changeable weather including wading through water, then I need to put my tent up each night and I’m told it will be very cold. I’m taking a picture of one of the children I will be raising money for so when I’m struggling I will look at it and think my challenge is only for five days, some of our children and families face challenges daily so if I can raise money to buy a piece of specialist equipment to make their life a little better and easier, it will be worth it. Our treat at the end of the trek is a trip to the Blue Lagoon which I’m sure we will be ready for, bring it on!
The team are breathing a sigh of relief now that June is over – we can catch up on all the jobs that have been left whilst we were busy dressing up as bananas and monkeys! But we always have to be thinking of what’s next, so Lauren is putting together our Christmas fundraising programme, sorry, yes I did say Christmas in July! It sounds soon but we will be starting in September which will be here before we know it. Watch this space for our Christmas jumper day, raffle and mince pie challenges.
We are looking for volunteers so if you or anyone you know can spare a couple of hours per week please get in touch, we are happy to play to your strengths but we need people to do admin in the office and also people who would like to fundraise in the community. We can offer training and fundraising materials, if you are looking to meet people or want something to add on your CV please call the office on 0191 2016289.
I hope you have a fun week, I’ll be thinking about you when I’m trekking Iceland! Thanks again for all your support, best wishes,
