03 Jun Caroll’s Column Friday 3rd June 2016
Hi folks. I hope you enjoyed the bank holiday and are coping with this unseasonal weather. It’s hard to believe it’s June but, fingers crossed, the sun should return soon.
Wow, what a week it has been. I’m sure you will have seen the 10 lovely kids we are hoping to support during June in our Go Bananas appeal.
We had a lovely day with them and their families talking about the equipment they need and what a difference it will make to them.
We are working flat out in the office to make sure we can support them all as I wouldn’t like to be the one to say who couldn’t have their item.
I know how generous the people of the North East are and I know I’m always asking for something, but it really would be good if everyone could give £3, which would more than cover all the equipment. One of the children I met was a smiley little girl called Lucie, a three-year-old who has muscle problems that effect her pelvis and lower limbs. She cannot stand on her own and walks with the aid of foot splints and a walker.
She was a very independent little girl with a mind of her own, which was lovely to see.
Although Lucie has a wheelchair from Wheelchair Services, it is small, and although she is learning to get around with it, her mam struggles to push it as she herself has a back problem.
Her mam has asked if we can buy Lucie a strong buggy that fits her as currently her feet hang over her current one and she can’t sit up. She says it’s the only way she can take her out and about.
If you are able to text, please text GBSF16£3 to 70070 or you can send a cheque to The Chronicle Sunshine Fund, The Chronicle, ncjMedia, Groat Market, Newcastle, NE1 1ED. Alternatively, go onto our JustGiving page. I would like to thank Eldon Square for hosting the family launch, which was super, and also both Eldon Square and the Metrocentre for sponsoring the whole Go Bananas campaign.
Another thank you goes to Gordon Brown Law Firm, the Metrocentre and Babucho for putting on a fabulous fashion show last week as a Go Bananas launch event. It was a lovely afternoon where Miss Newcastle hopefuls and two of our Go Bananas mothers modelled some wonderful outfits. It was a great way to raise money while enjoying ourselves.
I also had the pleasure of joining Busy Bees Nursery on Saturday morning for a toddle around Cobalt’s Nature Reserve.
It was a nice day for a walk when the dressed-up youngsters had to look for different clues along the way.
Sherbet the Metro Gnome joined the children for a picnic after the toddle, which was fun, although some of the children were a bit nervous at first. Thank you so much to Busy Bees for organising the event and all the families for taking part and donating. The monkey cup cakes were yummy.
Rebecca and I are off to the Cellular Solutions golf day at Close House so lets hope it stays dry.
If you are planning on doing something for Go Bananas in June please let me know or send in some pictures so we can share on our social media and website.
I hope you have a lovely week. Take care,
