21 May Caroll’s Blog Thurs 21st May 2015
HI, wow, wow and wow, what a week we’ve had at the Sunshine Fund.
It started last Friday with a visit from two of our amazing patrons Ant and Dec who spent the morning with us meeting Chronicle staff and some of the children and families we support.
We then had a Hadrian’s Wall Challenge weekend and launched our Grand Canyon Trek, it’s all go!
I have a few thank-yous this week. The Vermont hotel were incredible, donating their Sky lounge and refreshments for our event.
It was amazing with great views over Newcastle city centre and the sun shining. I love Newcastle and the North East.
Also thank you to all of our patrons, Ant and Dec, Pam Royle and Stephen Miller for making our guests feel so special.
Hadrian School deserve a thank you too for entertaining our guests. Unfortunately one of the children took poorly so also a huge thank you to The Enchanted Princesses for keeping the other children entertained until paramedics did their stuff. Luckily the little boy is now fine after a night’s stay in hospital.
Another thank you to our fabulous photographer Angela Carrington who was climbing on chairs and under tables to make sure she got the best shots, you’re a superstar Angela.
And to Barclays staff for volunteering. To everyone who attended and gave money and to you readers who sent in or texted for Superhero day a huge thank you. Without your money we couldn’t do the work we do.
Thanks also go to Metro Radio and Cash for Kids who we worked with on Superhero day, we had great fun and thank you to everyone who donated. We raised an amazing £28,000.
There is still time to donate, you can Text HAPPY to 70070 to donate £5 or send a donation to the Chronicle office.
All the money raised will be going to help local disabled and disadvantaged children.
One of the young girls we supported last year who is blind was overjoyed at the end of the Vermont event.
I asked her who she had enjoyed meeting, expecting her to say Ant and Dec. She told me it was another one of our patrons, Pam Royle, and when I asked her why she said she loved feeling her hair and she had let her feel her dress and told her what colours she was wearing. Thanks Pam for all your help on the day, the piece on ITV was super and you made Abigail’s day, you lovely lady.
Ant and Dec were true professionals but so down to earth, talking to everyone who attended, posing for pictures and listening to stories.
A special thank you to them for giving their time and for being so interested in the charity and the children, what lovely guys.
We had a brilliant group of 15 people do a Hadrian’s Wall Challenge at the weekend.
We covered 37 miles over three days and it’s not all flat, some of it is very challenging.
The Hadrian’s Heroes as they named themselves, were great, not all of them walkers. There were some laughs and some tears with a few blisters along the way but they were all determined to finish.
I must thank them for letting me join them on Saturday and Sunday, they made me so welcome and I have never laughed so much for ages.
Thanks to Intu Eldon Square who had a group of people doing the Trek and joined us at various points along the route with chocolate bars and crisps, never has a Bounty tasted so good !
Our 2016 Trek to the Grand Canyon is going to be amazing, we have received lots of interest so if you would like more information or want to book a place, please get in touch soon to avoid disappointment.
The scenery looks unbelievable and the visit to Las Vegas at the end should be a nice reward for all the hard work.
I hope you have a lovely bank holiday weekend, fingers crossed for the weather,
