22 Jan Caroll’s Blog Thurs 21st January 2016

now that I’ve finished off the last of the goodies left over from Christmas, it’s time to focus properly on the year ahead.

As well as planning our 2016 events, including June’s Go Bananas appeal, I have been booking holidays and fund-raising for our Grand Canyon trek.

It’s going to be a very busy but fun and productive year. Bring it on!

Julieanne and I met the very helpful Cheryl Flowers from Grosvenor Casino Newcastle last week and we booked a night there to kick off the Grand Canyon fund-raising.

The Casino Night is on Thursday, March 31 and we will be asking family and friends to join us to raise money for the children we support.

In return, our guests will receive tuition in blackjack and roulette. It promises to be a fabulous night so if you would like to join us then please get in touch.

We have 18 people signed up for October’s trek but still have a couple of places left so anyone who fancies a challenge should call me for more details. Registration will close at the end of February.

I would like to congratulate our fabulous patron Stephen Miller who received an MBE in the New Year Honours list for his services to sport.

Stephen is so inspirational, not just as a fantastic sportsman but also as a speaker motivating hundreds of people.

He is also such a positive role model and a lovely lad. This is a very deserved honour and I couldn’t be prouder – well done Stephen.

This week we will be meeting our Go Bananas sponsors, Intu Eldon Square and Intu Metro Centre, again to discuss plans for their centres throughout June.

Our wheelchair basketball event will be making a return on June 10 which gives able-bodied players an experience of what being in a wheelchair might be like.

At last year’s event, it was amazing to see how competitive it became. It was very physical but also lots of fun and we raised lots of money from it.

I can’t wait to see it again and may have a go myself this time.

We will also be holding our ‘wear yellow’ day on June 17 and, of course, our famous Sunshine Run is to come on June 22. I wonder how many people we can persuade to dress as bananas this year? There’s a challenge for you all.

We are aiming to raise £60,000 this year from Go Bananas as we know there are so many children who need our support and the equipment we buy is getting more expensive every year.

The amount will mean we can buy items for at least 10 local children as well as an organisation.

If you know of any children with disabilities or life-limiting illnesses who need specialist equipment to help them then please check out our website for our application form or contact me. We want to help as many children from the North East as possible.

The team are going bowling tonight with the girls from the charities Tiny Lives and CHUF. With all those fund-raisers together, I think we are in for a competitive evening.

I’m sure I wont get through the night without sponsoring someone or agreeing to volunteer at an event as they’re so passionate about what they do and the people they help.

It will be lots of fun plus we will be swapping lots of stories about the children we work with, the fundraising we are doing and how we can help more. It’s good to talk.

It’s Burns Night on Monday – I hope you celebrate in style. I will be making my usual haggis with tatties and neeps – I love it.

Have a fabulous week.
